More
than any other Division in the War, the 45th endured
511 days of frontline combat earning it six Battle
Stars. Their participation in the European
Theatre during World War II began with final training
exercises in North Africa then on to Sicily, Salerno
and the mountains of Southern Italy, Anzio, Southern
France, the Rhineland, and Germany through the fall of
Munich (including the liberation of the Dachau
concentration camp). The Division sustained over
62,000 casualties (including 3600 killed), but also
earned 8 Congressional Medals of Honor, 77
Distinguished Service Crosses, 81 Legion of Merit
Medals, 1104 Silver Stars, and 2619 Bronze
Stars.
