I went to the show it was
"Will Rogers" in "Ole Kentucky" and was it good? |
"In Old Kentucky" was
released in November 1935 three months after Will Rogers death in a plane
crash. Cast: Will Rogers, Dorothy
Wilson, Russell Hardie, Charles Sellon, Louise Henry. "Oklahoma's own Will Rogers stars in
In Old Kentucky. The storyline is in the grand tradition of most films about
the Bluegrass State: There's a long-standing family feud, a pair of
star-crossed lovers, and a crucial horse race. Rogers cuts through the
banality with his seemingly off-the-cuff observations about Kentucky life in
particular and the World in general. The best moment of In Old Kentucky has
Rogers attempting to escape from jail by putting on blackface makeup and
disguising himself as Bill "Bojangles" Robinson--whereupon he's
forced to tap-dance to prove his identity. 1935's In Old Kentucky was the
third film version of Charles T. Dazey's 1895 stage play. ~ Hal Erickson, All
Movie Guide" |

Saturday,

I went to the show. The name of
it was "Siver Streak". I
also went Sat. night. I seen my
"x" fellow. |
Siver Streak was released in
1934. Cast: Sally Blane, Charles
Starrett, William Farnum, Irving Pichel.
"Beyond the fact that both films shared a "railroad"
background, RKO Radio's 1935 actioner The Silver Streak bore no relation to
the 1976 Gene Wilder vehicle of the same name. The earlier film stars Charles
Starrett as Tom Caldwell, the dynamic young designer of a streamlined,
high-speed passenger train. During a polio epidemic, our hero endeavors to
prove the efficiency of his train by making a breakneck 2,000-mile trip to
deliver iron lungs to the Boulder Dam region. The well-chosen supporting cast
includes William Farnum as old-time railroad man B.J. Dexter, who in the
film's most moving scene ruminates over the brief but colorful history of his
chosen profession. The real-life Burlington Zephyr "plays" the
titular train in The Silver Streak, which earned a much-needed profit of
107,000 dollars for RKO. (One a side note, some of the music heard during the
final two reels was lifted from Max Steiner's score for King Kong.) ~ Hal
Erickson, All Movie Guide" |

Medicine Park is a town in Comanche County, Oklahoma, [about 60 miles
east of Blair] situated in the Wichita Mountains near the entrance to the
60,000 acre Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. Medicine Park has a long
history as a vintage cobblestone resort town. Medicine Park is also located
near the city of Lawton, Oklahoma and Fort Sill. Many of the original
structures are constructed out of naturally formed cobblestones—these red granite
cobblestones are unique to the Wichita Mountains. |

diverse group of ship passengers end up marooned on an isolated South Pacific
island. Unfortunately, the contents of the hold, a number of potentially
dangerous wild animals, also survived the wreck. Among the survivors is a
criminal who proves to be just as big a threat as the lions and tigers. ~

I went to show. Mother and Dad went to church. The name of it was "Mutiny on the
Bounty". |
"Mutiny on the Bounty"
was released in 1936. Cast: Clark
Gable, Charles Laughton, Franchot Tone, Dudley Digges, Herbert Mundin. Won OSCAR for Best Picture. "The 1932 publication of Charles
Nordhoff and James Norton Hall's Mutiny on the Bounty sparked a revival of
interest in the titular 1789 ship mutiny, and this 1935 MGM movie version won
the Oscar for Best Picture. Clark Gable stars as Fletcher Christian, first
mate of the infamous HMS Bounty, skippered by Captain William Bligh (Charles
Laughton), the cruelest taskmaster on the Seven Seas. Bligh's villainy knows
no bounds: he is even willing to flog a dead man if it will strengthen his
hold over the crew. Christian despises Bligh and is sailing on the Bounty
under protest. During the journey back to England, Bligh's cruelties become
more than Christian can bear; and after the captain indirectly causes the death
of the ship's doctor, the crew stages a mutiny, with Christian in charge.
Bligh and a handful of officers loyal to him are set adrift in an open boat.
Through sheer force of will, he guides the tiny vessel on a 49-day, 4000-mile
journey to the Dutch East Indies without losing a man. Historians differ on
whether Captain Bligh was truly such a monster or Christian such a paragon of
virtue (some believe that the mutiny was largely inspired by Christian's lust
for the Tahitian girls). The movie struck gold at the box office, and, in
addition to the Best Picture Oscar, Gable, Laughton, and Franchot Tone as one
of the Bounty's crew were all nominated for Best Actor (they all lost to
Victor McLaglan in The Informer). The film was remade in 1962 and adapted
into the "revisionist" 1984 feature The Bounty with Mel Gibson as
Fletcher Christian and Anthony Hopkins as Captain Bligh. ~ Hal Erickson, All
Movie Guide" |

We had Arith, Spelling Exam
today. Final. The room dramatized Enoch Arden. |
"Enoch Arden" is a
poem published in 1864 by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, during his tenure as
England's Poet Laureate. The hero of the poem, fisherman turned merchant
sailor Enoch Arden, leaves his wife Annie and three children to go to sea
with his old captain, who is offering him work. Enoch had lost his job when
he fell victim to an accident; in a manner that reflects the hero's masculine
view of personal toil and hardship to support his family, Enoch Arden left
his family to better serve them as a husband and father. However during his
voyage he is shipwrecked and remains lost and missing for ten years. He finds
upon his return from the sea that, after his long absence, his wife, who
believed him dead, is married happily to another man, his childhood friend
Philip (Annie has known both men since her childhood, thus the rivalry), and
has a child by him. The unfullfillment of his life with Annie and his
children, together with Philip taking his place, Enoch must watch someone
else raise his son and daughter (the third child, a boy, dies just after
Enoch leaves on his trek). Tragically Enoch does not ever disclose himself to
her that he is really alive, and he dies of a broken heart. |

Fun in Dallas at the 1936 Texas
Centennial Celebration
"in 1936, Texans celebrated their centennial of freedom with a
state-wide, year-long celebration. Almost every community had some sort of
event honoring the state but the main event was the $25,000,000 Texas Centennial
Exposition held at Dallas from June through November. This was the first
world's fair ever held below the Mason-Dixon Line. The Exposition was held on the grounds of
the Texas State Fair near downtown Dallas. Many of the buildings constructed
for the Centennial are still in use today at Fair Park and there is a program
to restore the buildings so they might last for more generations." [From http://www.texascentennial.com/ ] |
